Accelerating eBusiness in Eskom
In an environment of deregulation and decentralisation, Eskom, one of the world's largest electricity utilities, saw major opportunities in harnessing eBusiness technologies across its businesses.
Eskom's challenge was to spark eBusiness innovation in the right areas and with alignment to a consistent overall direction. High-value eBusiness projects needed to be selected and fast-tracked to implementation.
Using experience gained in large corporations internationally, Gemini Consulting helped Eskom establish commercial venture capital disciplines inside the corporation. Investment criteria were applied to mooted eBusiness projects and then capital allocated on the basis of likely financial returns and strategic impact. A multiple-gate assessment process was initiated resulting in a corporate incubation cycle that typically takes an eBusiness idea from initial screening to prototyping within about twelve weeks.
Since inception the incubator has spawned a number of valuable eBusiness initiatives:
- eForms: providing employees with online forms, eg. leave forms, saving tens of millions per annum in efficiency gains
- eProcurement: aligning players across the Eskom group around a common eProcurement solution, thereby concentrating and streamlining procurement spend with significant savings
- eLearning: delivering course material and interactive training through online media, with a high degree of acceptance from employees
- ePortal: building a single point of access and a common browser-based interface to all underlying applications and data
- Mobile commerce: creating a wireless platform for remote field force management, remote asset management, mobile meter reading and load scheduling
Gemini continues to partner with Eskom in additional eBusiness opportunities
through the incubator process, and supporting the implementation of successful
prototypes.
"The close alliance with Gemini Consulting, during both strategic planning and
implementation phases, has contributed directly to the successes achieved to
date."
